Sharpening Skills: Advanced “Play of the Hand” Bridge Lessons in Plymouth, Minnesota

At Spades & Company, we recently hosted a small group session focused on one of the most rewarding aspects of bridge games—the play of the hand. Led by instructor Sarah Wahl, this advanced bridge lesson invited players to move beyond bidding and into the strategic thinking that defines success at the table. Although bidding has evolved over time, play of the hand skills have remained consistent since the very beginning of bridge, making this area of the game both timeless and essential.

In an intimate, collaborative setting, players worked through core principles that elevate performance in any bridge tournament or casual game. The session emphasized how to make a plan before playing the first card, carefully evaluating winners and losers. In suit contracts, players focused on counting losers and using techniques like ruffing to eliminate them, while notrump play centered on identifying immediate winners and developing long suits. Foundational tactics such as “third hand high, second hand low” were reinforced, along with the importance of timing—drawing trumps early while maintaining control of the hand.

These focused bridge lessons reflect the mission of Spades & Company in Plymouth, Minnesota: helping players learn to play bridge at a deeper level while building confidence, connection, and community. Small group learning creates space for discussion, insight, and shared growth—where improving your game goes hand in hand with forming lasting friendships.
